"Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.” Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.” That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it."

Maurice Sendak (RIP)

That is beautiful. *sniff*

one of my favorite places …

one of my favorite places …

my friend brenda and her husband are going through a really tough time right now.  they both are disabled and suffering financially.  she has a lot of stained glass items (both finished and the supplies to make more) that she wants to sell to get money to help pay for their expenses.  if you are a stained glass aficionado and live anywhere near white river junction, vermont, you might want to get in touch with her, see what she has and help her out by buying some of her items…  click on the link and it will take you to her FB page where you can get in touch with her …

so two chairs are somewhat successfully painted white.  after initially using a flat primer/paint product i decided i wanted semi-gloss.  the first chair painted up relatively easy.  the second wasn’t so successful and i’m not sure why.  maybe because i actually felt like it was too pretty to paint once i had sanded and washed it.  the wood was incredibly beautiful — probably a birdseye maple on the spindles — or maybe because i didn’t do as good a job sanding it as i had the other …  who knows …

the two remaining chairs (one yellow and one that was partially stripped) were awaiting stripping.  yesterday i attempted to strip the one that was partially stripped and discovered that it was messy and the product i bought didn’t actually work very well.  discouraged, i pushed it aside and decided to sleep on what i would do.  today the plan is to lightly sand the yellow chair and then prime and paint to see how that goes.  i’m not sure what i’ll do with the partially stripped one … still discouraged about that …

and as for my birkies — well, i’m glad i wasn’t wearing my good ones and these did wash up fairly well …  now if i could just get the chicken poop off the soles we’d be all set (long story)

there are times in your life when you wish you could undo something you did.  well, here’s one of mine and it revolves around this cookbook.  this cookbook is my mother’s copy, but the same year she bought this for herself, she bought one for me as well.  when she died, my then best friend seemed like the perfect person to give my copy of the cookbook (and many of my mother’s owls because my friend liked owls too).  i never thought i would have another child, let alone a daughter … even though i wanted another child and a daughter.  my ex was very controlling and basically took matters into his own hands (literally).
at any rate, during the tail end of my marriage my seeming best friend took sides — and mine wasn’t it.  she even swore in an affadavit that i was an unfit mother and that my ex should get sole custody.  thankfully father god was on my side and the judge saw things a LOT differently.
at any rate, now my daughter (the one i thought i would never have) is 20 and cooking for herself and i would love to give her my copy of the cookbook — but i don’t own it — and the owls (because she, like her grandmother loves owls).  how do you undo something when you don’t even speak to that person anymore?
in my mind i feel like if i had betrayed someone so badly, as she did, i would give back all those things that had such meaning.  but she didn’t, and she still has contact with my ex, so it would be easy to do.  but her conscious isn’t mine and she hasn’t returned the items, and it makes me realize that at some point i’m going to have to let go of this.    hopefully, soon …

window …

“they” say that when one door closes another opens ….

well, i just got the bad news on my job (that i’ve only had a year come the week of 4/19) — she’s having to cut her patients by 70% …  which means she cut my hours from 16 to 8.  now that doesn’t seem like a big deal — but it truly is a big deal because with 16 i was barely making it, so with 8 i’ll be drowning …. and if a door (or even a window) doesn’t open up soon — i will be in huge trouble …

so if you’re the praying type, i’d appreciate the prayers …

chairs 101 - aka Arrowback or Hoosier Chair Project

These are the chairs i plan to strip and paint white and recreate the design from my hoosier table …  so far i’ve washed them all and scrubbed peeling paint (with a mask of course) from the really ugly one …  all the chairs together cost me $55.  so far supplies to strip are $37.  i’ll still need primer, paint, and brushes to complete it …

just some of the great things i’ve gotten lately.  a little silver polish later and a $1 ladle is discovered to be a holmes and edwards “lovely lady” ladle valued at $17.99 for replacement.

the teapot is oneida — was black as night … its only missing the pin to hold the lid in place it was actually less than $4 ($3.98)

the chairs were $20 and $10 (the cheaper one is the ugly yellow one).  planning to strip the yellow one then paint both of them white and have my daughter recreate the red design on my enamel table on them.  i still need one more but feel quite fortunate to have gotten these two ….  a little glue, a little paint, a little tlc and i’ll have lovely matching chairs for my table …

as for the silver pieces, i’ve gotten quite a few lately — in different patterns for a buck or less — cleaned them up and am quite pleased with the eclectic look i’m creating ….  can’t wait to unpack my blue willow and red ruby …
